Lucien Maris Merman Naga Romance Rejected Love

Blurb:

Lucien Maris, the cold yet breathtakingly beautiful merman, always rejected my advances, claiming we weren't the same kind. But how could that be? We both had magnificent tails! His smirk was icy as he corrected me: he was a merman, and I was a naga. My soft pink serpent tail instinctively coiled around his torso, only to be slapped away. "Go find your own kind," he snapped.

Raised by the Maris family after being rescued by patriarch Cassius Maris, I grew up believing I was merfolk like them. But Lucien's harsh truth opened my eyes. I embraced my naga heritage and found a partner who truly understood me. When Lucien saw us together, his expression turned complicated. I smiled shyly, "Being with your own kind really is better."

Flashback to my childhood: injured and alone, I was saved by Cassius Maris and brought into his beast-kin clan living among humans. For years, I thought I was a mermaid—until Lucien's care exposed the differences. His sapphire scales glittered like stars; my pink tail was velvety and matte. Yet, I couldn't resist trying to touch his tail, remembering how he once shielded me from a storm, his scales scraping raw against rocks. Cassius assured me they'd grow back stronger, but Lucien's heart remained as cold as the ocean depths.

Lucien Maris was a cold yet stunningly beautiful merman.
But he rejected my advances.
He even complained that we weren't the same kind.
I snapped, What do you mean we're not? Don't we both have big tails?
He smirked coldly,How is that the same? I'm a merman, and you're a naga.
His gaze dropped to my pink serpent's tail.
It was soft, long, and currently wriggling forward, trying to coil around Lucien's torso.
Lucien slapped it away impatiently, "Why bother clinging to me? Go find your own kind."
I had an epiphany.
Later, I truly found a naga as my partner.
One day, I ran into Lucien.
He stared at me and my new boyfriend, his expression complicated.
I lowered my head shyly, "Being with your own kind really is better."
I only realized I was a naga when I grew up.
As a small child, I suffered severe injuries.
I was curled up on the side of the road, waiting for the end, when I was found and taken in by Cassius Maris, the patriarch of the Maris family.
The Maris clan, like me, were beast-kin living secretly among humans.
Because I was raised among a group of merfolks, for the longest time, I firmly believed –that I was a merfolk too.
After all, we both had long, sweeping tails.
Until one day, Lord Cassius Maris told me he would be away for a while.
So, for this period, Lucien would be looking after me.
"Oh, yes, absolutely!" Hearing his name, my eyes instantly lit up, and I nodded eagerly.
Cassius chuckled, "That thrilled, are you? His temper isn't exactly a walk in the park."
Really?
I hadn't really paid much mind to his temper, if I'm honest.
Every time, I was either lost in a daze, staring at his impossibly handsome face, or completely mesmerized by the sheer beauty of his tail.
After Cassius dropped me off, I finally saw him again!
In the estate's outdoor pool.
A flash of blue shimmered beneath the water's surface –
Lucien was leaning back against the pool's edge, his magnificent merman tail arrogantly on display.
A splashed onto my feet from the swish of his fin, icy cold.
"Are you just going to stand there and stare?" Lucien opened his eyes, his voice cool.
"Whoops!"
I deliberately "slipped" into the pool.
Though it was clearly on purpose.
My pink naga tail instinctively—and quite conveniently—wrapped itself around his waist.
"Lucien, you scared me."
Lucien didn't even blink, shifting half a meter away. "It's like being touched by a wet eel. Unwrap yourself, for heaven's sake."
No way.
Our tails were practically the same, weren't they?
Wait, no.
I hadn't really compared them side-by-side before.
Now, in the sunlight,
I suddenly saw they had completely different textures.
His scales were like translucent sapphires, catching the light and scattering it like a handful of stars with his every movement.
While my tail, was soft and pliable, a muted pink with a sort of velvety, matte finish.
Like a cheap glass bead tossed carelessly into a pile of pearls.
The comparison made my heart sink a little.
But I refused to believe it, convinced my tail just looked waterlogged and wrinkled.
I ran a hand over it, still smooth and slippery.
"Lucien, can I touch it?"
"Touch what?"
"Your tail."
He shot me a look that was a clear 'no' without him having to say a word.
I pouted, suddenly understanding Cassius's earlier comment.
But then I remembered, Lucien's tail had been injured once.
No wonder he disliked being touched.
It happened about three years after the Maris family took me in.
I was playing down by the cove when a sudden squall blew in.
I was shivering, hiding in a gap between the rocks, when a huge wave crashed.
It was Lucien who was there in an instant, using his own body and tail to shield me from the worst of it, dragging me back to safety through the howling wind.
The most beautiful blue scales on his tail were scraped raw against the sharp rocks, leaving the water tinged with red.
I was terrified, tears streaming down.
Cassius reassured me, "It's okay, they'll grow back, even stronger."
I was half-convinced.
For weeks after, I'd sneak little touches to the healing spot on his fin.
