§PROLOGUEThe first thing Gu Beizhou registered was the sharp scent of cheap liquor on my breath.
The second was my knee pressing firmly between his thighs.
The world, which a moment ago had been a hazy blur of opera music and smoke, snapped into brutal focus.
He wasn't in his private room at the theater anymore.
He was on his back, on his own damn sofa, and I—his boy, his shadow, his perfectly obedient attack dog for the past ten years—was pinning him down.
He started to push, his initial confusion hardening into cold fury.
"Qi Ren."
His voice was a low growl, a promise of violence.
It didn't matter.
I was stronger.
He taught me Tai Chi and Xing Yi Quan not to defend myself, but to be his weapon.
He just never imagined that one day, the weapon would be aimed at him.
I hooked my hands under his arms and hauled him upright.
He stumbled, his leg buckling slightly.
A dark satisfaction curled in my gut.
He tried to run, limping toward the door, spitting curses over his shoulder.
"You reckless brat! You ungrateful wolf!"
I caught him in three strides, slung him over my shoulder like a sack of rice, and threw him onto the center of the massive bed.
The fight seemed to bleed out of him then, replaced by a tense, waiting stillness.
His eyes, usually so distant and sharp, were wide with a dawning, terrible understanding.
I leaned over him, my hands planting on either side of his head, trapping him.
He was eight years my senior, the master of the Xing Syndicate, a man whose name silenced rooms.
And tonight, he was mine.
"Get the hell off me, Qi Ren," he snarled, the words a desperate command.
I just smiled, lowering my head until my lips were a breath away from his.
"Second Master," I murmured against his mouth, savoring the way he flinched.
"Be good now. Lie still."
§01
Gu Beizhou wasn't awake yet.
My first instinct was to slip out of bed and run.
Escape was complicated by the dead weight of his arm across my chest.
The sculpted muscle, usually so intimidating, was now a canvas of purplish bite marks.
