§PROLOGUE“Don't move,” he rasped, his voice a low growl against the shell of my ear.
His body was a furnace behind me, caging me against the cool silk of the sheets.
The scent of pine and fir, usually a comforting forest floor, was now a raging wildfire, thick and suffocating.
This was Gavin Valerius.
Not the calm, collected rival to my childhood best friend, but an Alpha lost in the storm of his Rut.
His teeth grazed the sensitive skin over my scent gland, a promise and a threat.
“Just a little longer, Ev,” he pleaded, his control fraying with every word. “Just let me have your scent.”
My own body, a traitor, answered him with a shiver of pure, unadulterated want.
How had it come to this?
Three months ago, I would have rather died than be this close to him.
Three months ago, my heart belonged to another.

The roar of the crowd at Hawthorne University’s Kings’ Arena was deafening, but I barely heard it.
I stood on the sidelines, a bottle of water in my hand, my expression as placid as a frozen lake.
“President Crestwell is so handsome!”
“Yeah, but it’s a shame he’s a Beta.”
“What’s wrong with being a Beta? They’re emotionally stable. And Evan’s skills are on par with any Alpha!”
“But a Beta shouldn’t be that beautiful. He’s prettier than me, and I’m an Omega.”
“Seriously. If he weren’t a Beta, I’d be shipping him and Ryder Kingston so hard.”
“Such a waste. Betas are just… lacking.”
“Yeah, they can’t even smell pheromones.”
“Shh, he might hear you.”
Behind me, a group of Omegas whispered.
“And now, please welcome the Student Council President to the stage to present the championship trophy.”
The announcer’s voice echoed through the stadium, and I walked onto the podium.
Ryder Kingston was the captain of the winning team.
He wore a white jersey, his muscles clearly defined, his sun-kissed skin glowing under the lights.
Sweat trickled down his temples, tracing a path down his jaw and disappearing into the collar of his shirt.
I could even smell the sharp, invigorating scent of his lemon verbena pheromones.
Ryder saw me, his eyes flickered with a familiar, mischievous glint.
He intentionally released a small, targeted burst of his scent.
My heat was due any day now. A jolt like that was a physical blow.
My nails dug into my palm, my knees threatening to buckle as a blush crept up my neck, hot as shame.
“Whoa, Ry, take it easy. I can smell that lemon verbena from here,” one of his teammates joked.
The basketball team was all Alphas. Ryder’s pheromones were just background noise to them.
To me, they were a siren’s call.
“Hey, President, why’s your face so red?”
“Damn, he looks like a little Omega. Makes me want to mess with him.”
A few of the players noticed my distress, their laughter casual and cruel.
Hearing that, Ryder’s expression hardened. He instantly retracted his pheromones.
“Alright, let’s get this over with,” he said, his tone clipped.
I placed the medal around his neck.
He leaned in, his lips brushing my ear. “I’m not coming back to the condo tonight.”
I closed my eyes for a fraction of a second.
He knew. He knew my heat was coming this month.
But I couldn't bring myself to beg.
I just pulled back, creating a cool distance between us. “I know.”

Sure enough, at 11 PM, the fire started.
It began as a low thrumming under my skin, then quickly escalated to a full-blown inferno.
My phone buzzed with a message from my mom.
[Sweetheart, this is your first adult heat. It might be more dangerous than before.]
[Suppressants might not work. Make sure Ryder stays with you. Call me if anything feels wrong.]
Ryder and I had grown up together, our parents were the closest of friends.
When I presented as an Omega, they were ecstatic, practically planning our wedding.
After we got into the same university, they bought us a lakeside condo to share.
They had instructed Ryder to take care of me, especially given my… delicate presentation.
They didn’t know he didn't want me. That he might even hate me.
“Evan, what’s the difference between an Omega like you and a Beta? You’re no fun.”
I remembered him saying that, and my eyes stung.
I didn’t tell my mom he wasn't here. I typed back with trembling fingers:
[Don’t worry, Mom. Ryder is taking good care of me.]
